According to Charles Essex 50 per cent of first trimester spontaneous abortions and one in 200 neonates have a chromosomal abnormality.
This provides the rationale for the proliferation of routine pregnancy tests (RPT) which are an extension of the medical model of maternity care.
The question I want to address is: Is this really in the best interests of either women or midwives?
