Is there a 'Midwifery Ethic'?
Earlier this year, I was privileged to take part in the midwifery education workshops which took place at Victoria University... There were thirty-three midwives from all over New Zealand from all spheres of practices...joining with us were two consumers...and representatives from the New Zealand Nurses' Association and the Nursing Council.
We worked hard and determinedly to articulate the beliefs that midwives hold about themselves, their profession, the women that they serve and the childbearing process itself.
I want to explore some of those beliefs. I want to look at where those beliefs have come from and the framework from which they operate as well as the framework in which they operate.I will consider whether the set of beliefs that midwives hold form a midwifery 'ethic' for the whole profession and the effect that 'ethic' has on our relationships with women, with colleagues both midwifery and medical and with the world at large.
